How to Keep Your Steel Structure Building Cool in Summer
Steel buildings are strong, fast to erect, and cost-effective—but they can turn into ovens under the summer sun if not properly planned. High thermal conductivity means steel absorbs and transfers heat quickly, driving up indoor temperatures and making conditions uncomfortable for people, stored goods, or machinery.
The good news: you don’t need to overspend on AC to keep things manageable. Here are proven ways to maintain a cooler interior without blowing your energy budget.
☀️ Start with Roof & Wall Treatment — Your First Line of Defense
Since the roof receives the most direct sunlight, prioritize its treatment.
Reflective Roof Cladding / Paint
Choose light-colored (white, light gray) roof sheets with reflective coatings, or apply reflective paint after installation. This alone can reduce roof surface temperature by 10–15°C and lower interior temps significantly.
Insulation Is Non-Negotiable
Use composite panels (sandwich panels) with PU/PIR foam or rock wool cores, or install separate insulation layers beneath the roof and walls. Insulation slows heat transfer so interiors stay cooler longer.
Double Skin / Ventilated Cavity
A double-skin roof with an air gap between outer and inner layers allows natural airflow, carrying away heat before it enters the workspace.
